Terms of Service
Effective: June 2026
These terms govern your use of unmute, a voice dictation app for macOS. By installing or using the app, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the app.
What unmute does
unmute records audio when you press a configured trigger key, transcribes it via one of three engines you choose, and pastes the result into the focused application. The three engines are:
- On-device — transcription runs locally via whisper.cpp on your Mac.
- Bring-your-own-key (BYOK) — audio is sent directly from your Mac to Groq using an API key you provide.
- No key required — audio is sent through our infrastructure to Groq and the transcript is returned. Requires a free account and prepaid credits.
The free engines
The on-device and BYOK engines are free to use. The app itself is open source under the MIT license. You can read the source, fork it, modify it, and ship your own version, subject to the license terms.
No key required — account and credits
Using the no-key engine engine requires:
- A free account, created with an email address you control.
- A non-zero credit balance, purchased as prepaid top-ups.
Each managed-cloud transcription deducts an amount from your balance based on the audio duration and the model used. The deducted amount is shown to you per request in the in-app billing view.
Credit top-ups are processed by Dodo Payments as Merchant of Record. Your card information is handled by Dodo, not by us. See our Refund Policy for the rules on top-ups, and our Privacy Policy for what we record per request.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the no-key engine to transcribe content that's illegal, abusive, or violates third-party rights.
- Reverse-engineer, scrape, or automate the no-key engine API in ways that simulate a different product.
- Share managed-cloud credits across multiple users or attempt to resell access.
- Bypass usage controls, rate limits, or balance enforcement.
We may suspend or terminate access to the no-key engine if we have a reasonable belief these rules are being broken. The free engines remain available regardless.
No warranty
The app and all three engines are provided "as is." Transcription accuracy depends on audio quality, language, model, background noise, and many factors outside our control. We don't warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or accurate. Don't rely on it for anything where being slightly wrong matters a lot (medical instructions, legal documents, etc.).
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising out of your use of unmute is limited to the amount you've paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim. We're not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when the product changes. The "Effective" date above always reflects the latest version. Material changes affecting paying users will be communicated by email to the address on the account.
